Our Mission

A Place to Heal

HIR Wellness Institute, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides accessible and free mental health and victim advocacy services for Indigenous and underserved survivors of violence.

How we do this

We specialize in trauma recovery, intergenerational healing, and post-traumatic growth for individuals and families affected by sexual assault, domestic and intimate partner violence, human trafficking, loss by suicide and homicide, and community violence.

We honor and uplift Indigenous and underserved communities by expanding access to compassionate, culturally grounded, and trauma-informed mental health care—bringing healing from our offices into neighborhoods and communities.

We walk alongside survivors as they reclaim their stories, restore dignity, and nurture collective well-being across generations. We believe every survivor deserves the opportunity to heal and to thrive.

Who We Are

Our Vision

Healing, Hope, and Community Care

Whether it is a mother and her children escaping domestic violence, or an individual seeking safety after experiencing abuse, our services are here to walk alongside survivors every step of the way—from crisis response, to counseling, to wellness, and ultimately to community.

At HIR Wellness Institute, we are dedicated to providing free and accessible services for survivors of all ages. We understand that healing takes time, and that true recovery requires compassionate, wraparound care that meets each person exactly where they are—one step at a time.

A critical key to helping survivors heal is removing barriers to care. At HIRWI, we eliminate these barriers by providing therapy sessions, evaluations, assessments, and consultations at no cost. Families should never be forced to choose which loved one receives therapy because of limited funds or restrictive insurance. That is why we offer multiple entry points into our services—individual counseling, group therapy, specialized programs, drop-in support, wellness services, advocacy, and outreach.

Our philosophy is simple yet powerful: we focus on healing, nurturing safe and healthy relationships, and building the skills survivors need to reclaim their lives. By creating a community of helpers and healers, we support sustainable, long-term pathways to wellness.

Accessible Mental Health Care is Violence Prevention

Growing a village of helpers & healers

We believe learning happens best through connection and service. Our mental health interns learn and work alongside seasoned providers, offering care that reaches far beyond the walls of our offices and into the heart of our neighborhoods and communities. By training and mentoring interns alongside our licensed mental health team, we ensure that learning is grounded in real-world, trauma-informed practice. Together, we co-create a workforce rooted in empathy, skill, and belonging.

Our services go beyond traditional talk therapy. From individual counseling and group therapy to wellness workshops, drop-in mental health art studios, somatic healing sessions, and occupational therapy sessions, we co-create spaces where healing can take many forms. Our team also offers consultations, treatment-focused services for dual diagnoses, and mobile mental health care services.

By removing barriers to care and integrating mental health with culture, creativity, and community connection, HIRWI is reimagining what healing and service delivery looks like for survivors of violence. Together, we are building a new model of care—one rooted in accessibility, belonging, recovery, dignity, and hope.

Healing Begins with Safety, Connection, and Community

Evidenced-Based Services

Healing from violence begins by restoring balance in mind, body, heart, spirit, and relationships. At HIR Wellness Institute, we center community-based, trauma-informed mental health care—creating safe and supportive spaces where survivors can process experiences, rebuild trust, and reconnect with their sense of self and community.

Evidence-based trauma-informed care recognizes that trauma impacts every part of life—how people think, feel, relate, heal, and share their stories. This approach emphasizes safety, choice, and cultural understanding, guiding how we gather information, building a healthy network of relationships, and design integrated and interdisciplinary treatment plans. When we lead with empathy instead of judgment, we reduce re-traumatization and open pathways toward recovery and resilience.

Grounded in neuroscience, attachment theory, community belonging, and Indigenous healing practices, our model supports both prevention and intervention—addressing the roots of harm while nurturing long-term healing.

By prioritizing trauma-informed mental health, we help survivors move from surviving to thriving—empowering individuals, families, and communities to heal together and build a future rooted in safety, dignity, and hope.

Trauma-Informed Care
Intergenerational Healing

Intergenerational Healing

Heavy Hearts & Grief Work

Healing from violence in Indigenous and underserved communities requires acknowledging the long-standing impact of Historical Traumas passed through generations. Our therapists are trained and skilled in providing trauma-informed and complex grief work for survivors who have experienced complex losses due to suicide, homicide, substance use, and community violence.

Our holistic, community-informed approach intentionally fosters a safe and welcoming space for survivors to seek support, grieve, heal, learn new skills, and rebuild hope. Intergenerational healing focuses on restoring connection, resilience, and wellness across families and communities, breaking cycles of violence while honoring cultural strengths, traditions, and wisdom.

Relatives Reached in a Year!

Our mental health groups provide a safe, supportive space where survivors can build coping skills, communication skills, and social connections. Through expressive art and play therapies, occupational therapy, and counseling services, participants engage in hands-on, experiential learning that promotes emotional well-being, resilience, and community.

This includes children and families provided with crisis care for victim and legal advocacy services. Our advoacy response team provides direct support to sex trafficking victims, missing relatives, and domstic violence and sexual assault.

In the past year, our Mobile Mental Health Clinics have reached over 5,000 people regionally and statewide, providing free, immediate mental health services and resources. Services include walk-up counseling, healing sessions, triage support, mental health and suicide risk screenings, and more than 20 brief mental health activities that can be taught in three minutes or less, offering fast, accessible tools for wellness wherever they are needed.
